He has helped me through the confusing maze of Medicare, Supplements, and Advantage plans and the plans I am on now have been outstanding. Do not hesitate to contact Garrett Ball. 1. I am planning my retirement for 2019. Having recently turned 65, I’ve signed up for Medicare as instructed. Do I need to contact Medicare now and sign-up during this enrollment period to prepare for my 2019 retirement date?

    • Hi Mike, I’m not sure if you received the answer to this already, but the answer is ‘no’. You do not need to take action during this annual enrollment period if you are still covered by group insurance. You will be able to add Part B, Part D (Rx coverage), and a Medigap if you want one, when you retire.
You should not sign up for Medicare Part B in most cases, if you are covered by group insurance as your primary coverage. Having both a group plan that acts as primary and Medicare Part B would be a duplication, an extra cost, and would “use” your open enrollment rights for purchasing a Medicare Supplement plan (you have 6 months from your Medicare Part B start date). This could limit your plan options when you do retire. Hope that helps – let us know if you have other questions.
